Fireboy & Watergirl: Forest Temple is a co-operative puzzle platformer, and it plays nothing like the rest of the catalogue on a Pong-focused site. There is no ball and no rally. You guide two characters through a stone temple, and both of them have to reach their exit door before a level counts as finished.

Each character is immune to one hazard and killed by another. Fireboy swims through lava and burns in water. Watergirl does the opposite. Green goo is deadly to both. That one rule drives the whole game: the safe route for one character is often a death trap for the other, so you spend as much time planning two paths as you do jumping.

A session is a string of short rooms. Each has coloured gems to grab, a few levers, buttons and sliding platforms, and usually a block to shove into place. Most rooms take a minute or two once you see the trick. That makes it a good break between matches of Retro Ping Pong, and a better one if a friend is sitting next to you.

How to play

The game is built for two players on one keyboard. Fireboy uses the arrow keys: left and right to walk, up to jump. Watergirl uses W, A and D: W jumps, A and D walk. Click inside the game once so the keys reach it.

Red gems belong to Fireboy and blue gems to Watergirl. The gems are optional, but they feed the rating at the end of a level, along with how fast you finished. The exit doors are marked with each character's colour, and both need to be occupied at the same time.

Playing alone is possible. You switch between the two characters and move one into position while the other waits, for instance holding a button down on a pressure plate. It is slower, but plenty of levels can be solved this way.

Tips

1. Before you move, look at where each hazard sits and decide which character crosses which pool. Do the planning first and the jumping second.
2. Buttons and plates only work while something is standing on them. Park one character there, then send the other through the opened gate.
3. Pushable blocks can bridge a gap or hold a plate down, but they can also jam in a corner. If a block gets stuck, restart the room instead of fighting it.
4. Do not chase every gem on your first attempt. Clear the room, then replay it for the full set once you know the route.
